It looks like Indian box office is going through a dry spell at the moment. After the grand success of Cheannai Express and Krrish 3, it seems like audience is not ready to go to theater for a shorter while. Tigmanshu Dhulia directorial Bullet Raja featuring Saif Ali Khan & Sonakshi Sinha has failed to create ripples at the box office as it could collect only 13 crores in 2 days (6.50 crores each on Friday and Saturday, quoted by BoxOfficeIndia). Evidently, there was no growth on Saturday and that says that the fate of the film is already sealed.
Much awaited Karan Johar rom-com Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and Anil Sharma-Sunny Deol’s ‘Singh Saheb The Great’ performed badly at the box office. Gori Tere Pyaar Mein collected 8.75 crores after first 3 days whereas Singh Saheb The Great was little better as it collected 14.25 crores.
On the other hand Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ramleela is faring really well in its 2nd week as it collected 89 crores in 10 days. The movie is fast reaching the 100 crores mark.
Such shocking collection figures of Gori Tere Pyaar Mein has surprised everyone in the industry.
Imran Khan – Kareena Kapoor starer romantic comedy ‘Gori Tere Pyaar Mein’, produced by Karan Johar opened very poorly at the box office. According to boxofficeindia the movie collected mere 2.50 crores on Friday, which is one of the lowest collection figures in the recent times!
On the other hand, Sunny Deol’s Singh Saab The Great also had a similar fate on Friday. However, overall business of Singh Sahab is better than Gori Tere Pyaar Mein. It collected around 5 crores on Day 1.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram Leela had a very good first week, collecting approximately 75crores nett. Ramleela had decent collections on 2nd Friday as well.
Hrithik Roshan’s super hero flick Krrish 3 is busy breaking records at the box office. The movie just broke the highest single day record held by Chennai Express – on Monday, 4th day of its release, it collected 35.91 crores. It is the highest single day collection ever! With that, the movie enters the 100 crore club in just 4 days! From Friday to Monday it has collected 108.61 crores. The movie got released during the pre-diwali period, which is considered to be a dull phase for movie business. For the same, it collected 26 crores only on Day 1 despite the wide release. However, it broke the previous records of non-holiday releases on Day 1 with this figure. Krrish 3 is second on the fastest to 100 crore list. Chennai Express collected 227 crores in 3 days + paid previews.
Previous single day record holder Chennai Express collected 33.12 crore on day 1. For Krrish 3, it’s a massive achievement considering the fact that it got released during the infamous pre-diwali period. The movie sustained very well over the weekend and collected 72.8 crores in 3 days. Also, this must be the all time record for 4th day.
Krrish has done exceptionally well in Overseas as well over the weekend. It collected 23.57 crores in first 3 days in overseas market!
As of now, Tuesday collections are also looking very good. It looks like it will be another massive day at the box office today.

Rakesh Roshan’s super hero flick Krrish 3 starring Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Kangna Ranaut collected 78 crores in 3 days at the box office. Initially, the movie was supposed to get released on Monday (November 4th) given the pre-diwali period is considered to be unlucky for the movie business. People tend to be busy with Diwali pooja and the celebrations during this period and every film suffered at box office when those films got released during this phase. However, for Krrish 3, it wasn’t such a bad move after all. It collected 26 crores on day 1, which is a record in itself for the non-holiday category. It could sustain the momentum over the weekend and it collect 78 crores in 3 days!
Noted trade guru Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Krrish3 collects Rs 72.8 cr nett in its opening weekend: Fri 25.5 cr, Sat 23 cr, Sun 24.3 cr. Inclusive of Hindi + Tamil + Telugu.”
And the Monday collections are looking really good at the moment. Taran Adarsh tweeted.
“Monday trends [holiday]: #Krrish3 has opened to packed houses everywhere. Monday biz will be HUMUNGOUS.”
He also tweeted about Rakesh Roshan initially opting for Nov. 4 release, he tweeted, “Rakesh Roshan initially wanted to release #Krrish3 on Monday [4 Nov], since biz would be optimum today. Yes, Mon should be bigger than Sun.”
It looks like Krrish 3 is on the way to become a huge HIT, now the important question is, will it cross the record of Chennai Express?
According to boxofficeindia, Rakesha Roshan’s super hero flick Krrish 3 starring Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Vivek Oberoi & Kangna Ranaut has collected approximately 18 crores on day 1 (it could be 18-19 crores after final estimation) according to early estimates. Despite having a huge release, the movie couldn’t break the record of Chennai Express since it got released during the infamous Diwali dull phase. According to trade pundits, this dull phase will continue till Sunday afternoon shows. That means the movie will have very collection on Monday onward if it catches the fancy of the audience.
Krrish has done good business in its Tamil & Telugu versions as well. As per early estimates, 2 crores have come from regional dubbed versions.
As usual, trade guru Taran Adarsh posted a slightly inflated total – 25 crores, including the dubbed version.
He tweeted, “Despite pre-Diwali and non-holiday, #Krrish3 takes a fantabulous start. India biz [Hindi + Tamil + Telugu]: Fri ₹ 25 cr. Mindblowing!”
Though reviews have been average to good, the general word of mouth is very good for the movie. Above all, it’s a clean film for both families and kids and that should work in the favor of the movie in coming days.

Vikramaditya Motwane’s epic period love story Lootera (featuring Ranveer Singh & Sonakshi Sinha) is finally improving its performance at the box office after a slow start on Friday. Lootera is the second movie of Vikramaditya, who had won rave reviews for his first film ‘Udaan’. Lootera also followed suite as it is the best reviewed movie of the year so far. Reviewers (even including the most cynical one) have been saying in unison that Lootera is an absolute classic that Bollywood has been waiting for.The buzz around the movie was unprecedented before the release. For the same, a good opening was expected. However, the movie could collect only 5.15 crore on Friday (as per trade guru Taran Adarsh). For a movie with such pre-release hype, we expected better numbers. Due to this, people were quick to speculate that Lootera is going to be a flop at the box office.
However, surprising everyone, the movie picked up on Saturday and Sunday as per earlier estimation. Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Lootera shows upward trend on Sat and Sun. Sat biz was 25% to 35% up from Fri. Sunday biz strong too. Word of mouth very good.” Initially many viewers complained about the pace of the film. But it looks like viewers are finally giving their nod for the movie.
Tanuj Garg of Balaji Motion Pictures (who have produced it) tweeted, “A friend from Ludhiana just text to say that #lootera is housefull at Cinepolis & people were choked with emotion at the end.”
It looks like word of mouth is really helping the movie. However, it’s too early to say the movie will become a success at this point. It will be more clear as we are presented with more numbers in the coming days.
Himmatwala, starring Ajay Devgn & Tamannaah and directed by Sajid Khan, has opened to predictable numbers at Indian box office on Friday. On day one it collected around 12 crores nett in India. However, it’s not a great number for big film released on a holiday with large number of prints. As expected it did quite well at the single screens at the mass centers across the country, especially in UP. And the business at the multiplexes remained low as it was expected. The movie was panned by critics just like every other Sajid Khan movies. But this time around the criticism was at its peak as several critics heavily criticized his brand of movies without any mercy. Moreover, the audience also didn’t seem to enjoy the movie as it was made fun of on twitter on the day of its release. But then a movie like Himmatwala was unabashedly made with conviction given the original 1983 film was an even bigger critics failure. So, the bad press was kind of expected for this movie. However, since it failed to shatter records of any kind, it could be an indication that audience have different things in their mind right now.
Coming back to the business, Delhi & Punjab multiplexes registered very low collections. And in the rest of circuits it was an average performer. Despite that the movie did quite well in U.P. Since mass movies don’t usually register a huge growth on Saturday the movie is expected to continue in the same fashion over the weekend unless there is a huge drop on Saturday & Sunday. If it is able to improve a bit in multiplexes on Saturday it may have a good chance to have a good total in the long run. However, it’s unlikely considering the bad word of mouth for the film. Himmatwala is also doing well at the mass centers like Bihar & Rajastan as well. Himmatwala stars Ajay Devgn, Tamannaah, Paresh Rawal & Zarina Wahab.

Neeraj Pandey’s (of A Wednesday fame) second directorial Special Chabbis (Special 26) starring Akshay Kumar & Choreographer turned director Remo D’Souza’s ABCD – Any Body Can Dance opened at Indian box office today (February 8). Special 26 is an edge of the seat thriller like Neeraj’s first film and ABCD Any Body Can Dance is India’s first 3D dance film. As expected Special 26 opened to very good reviews whereas ABCD Any Body Can Dance opened to mediocre reviews. Today at the box office ABCD opened to 50-60% collection during the morning & after noon shows whereas Special 26 opened to 30% response. ABCD had youngsters flocking in to the theaters all thanks to the colorful song & dance promos. Although Akshay Kumar is a big star Special 26 registered lower collections due to the fact that it isn’t a mass film. It is a sensible film made for those who like well made thrillers.
As for the number of prints, Special 26 obviously had a wider release since Akshay Kumar is a big star. But in case of ABCD Any Body Can Dance, the movie is in 3D and the revenue will be comparatively high considering the charge for 3D glasses.
However, like a real suspense thriller things took a U-turn toward the evening. ABCD Any Body Can Dance collections dropped to 30% whereas Special 26 jumped to 50-60% range. Considering the word of mouth as well as the critics reviews are in favor of the movie, Special 26 will most probably have a better weekend figure. In the end, both the movies stand at a 40% day 1 figure. The exact day 1 collection figure is not available at the moment and we will update on the same by tomorrow. Coming to the last week releases, Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroop dominated the rest. The movie ended up collecting an approximate figure of 11.5 crores nett in week 1. The movie maintained very well on the weekdays. The controversy surrounding the release of the movie in Tamil Nadu helped the Hindi version of the movie.
Bejoy Nambiar’s multi-starer David starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Vikram & Tabu failed to make any impact at the box office. It collected mere 3.86 crores nett in Week 1. David is a big disappointment for everyone involved with the project. Neil Nitin Mukesh has been part of several flops and David is the latest movie on that list. Tamil super star Vikram once again failed to make a difference in Bollywood after his dismal start with Mani Ratnam’s Raavan before.
On the other hand Abbas Mastan’s Race 2, which is in its 3rd week now, comfortably crossed the 100 crore mark in India making it the first blockbuster of the year. Race 2 featuring an ensemble cast fetched 24.35 crores nett in week 2. It’s the biggest hit of both the heroes Saif Ali Khan & John Abraham. Race 2 also features Anil Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez & Amisha Patel. Given the movie is a hit the announcement of the 3rd part should come out very soon. Race 2 a huge success at overseas as well. The movie has so far collected 6 million dollars in the international market.
Four movies got released today (Bejoy Nambiar’s stylish David, the long-in-the-making Govinda-Priyanka starer Deewana Main Deewana, Asha Bhosle’s acting debut Mai & Kamal Haasan’s controversial Vishwaroop) and all the four opened to poor response at the Indian box office. Vishwaroopam took the lead as the collection was slightly better than other three films. Deewana Main Deewana & Mai were so poor that we can already write them off – these two most likely won’t pick up over the weekend.
As for Kamal Haasan’s much-in-the-news Vishwaroop (Vishwaroopam in Tamil), all that controversy surrounding the release of the film in Tamil Nadu seems to have helped the movie a bit. The movie showed improvement during the after noon shows and it is expected to pick up over the weekend. Having said that, the reviews have been average for the movie.
Coming to Bejoy Nambiar’s (director of Shaitan) David starring Vikram, Tabu, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Monica Sharma Dogra & Isha Sharvani, it opened to poor numbers at the box office. The stylishly shot movie is meant for a niche audience (especially city based audience, or in other words multiplex audience) and it may pick up over the weekend if the word of mouth is strong enough. As for the reviews, they are not particularly encouraging as most of them gave average reviews.
Asha Bhosle’s acting debut Mai is a small film and it wasn’t expected to open big. The movie is, once again, made for a niche audience and if it hits the right chord with its target audience it may become a profitable venture for the producers.
Last but not least Deewana Main Deewana featuring Govinda & Priyanka Chopra was long in the making and the movie holds no buzz in today’s time. We’ve to appreciate the producers for finally releasing it against all the odds!
Last week’s bumper release Race 2 collected 76.10 crore in week 1 (according to Taran Adarsh). The weekend business was excellent as it fetched 51.35 crore but the movie started sliding from Monday onward. Luckily, the dull opening of this week’s releases has worked in favor of Race 2 as it remains the number 1 choice of moviegoers this week as well.
